How Many Calories In Whiskey – Counting Calories In Whiskey For Fat Loss

By Rob Poulos...

Dieters looking for an easy way to enjoy a few cocktails without working overtime in the gym, look no further than the classic spirit whiskey.

Whiskey is made from fermented grains and aged in wooden casks to give it that clean flavor famous worldwide. Most importantly, the calories in whiskey make it a good drink for those of us worried about counting calories. Keep reading to find out the best ways for you to count calories in whiskey.

How Many Calories In Whiskey?

Because whiskey is a hard liquor, you get a lot of booze without a lot of calories. This makes whiskey an ideal drink for mixed cocktails without adding a significant amount of calories.

One ounce of whiskey has just 69 calories, which should be music to the ears of dieters and non-dieters alike!

The calories in whiskey are friendly for those of us who count calories and it provides a clean platform for easy to make low calorie cocktails.

Whiskey Serving Size

One of the most appealing things about the calories in whiskey is that a serving size doesn’t have a lot of calories. One serving of whiskey is 1.4 fluid ounces, which is just 103 calories.

When creating low calorie whiskey cocktails it is important to keep serving size in mind, as this is where many of the calories can start to add up. If you don’t want a drink reaching close to 200 or 300 calories, then always keep the serving size of your whiskey at 1.4 fluid ounces.

Most cocktails call for one jigger of whiskey, or 1.4 fluid ounces, and any cocktail should adhere to these measurements.

Reducing Calories In Whiskey Cocktails

If your goal is to make the most of the calories in whiskey, then you should stick to low calorie mixers. There are plenty of mixers that can be made with fewer calories as well as plenty of zero calorie mixers to add into your whiskey.

On the rocks: Maximizing the calories in whiskey without sacrificing weight loss can be done by enjoying nothing but the calories in whiskey. Whiskey ‘on the rocks’ simply means enjoying one serving of whiskey over a few ice cubes. This is a sipping cocktail that allows you to feel as though you’re drinking without ordering an endless supply of cocktails.

Straight Up: Although typically reserved for mixed cocktails, you can enjoy your whiskey straight up, which simply means shaken with ice until chilled and then strained into a glass. This way you can enjoy the full flavor of the whiskey without melting ice. This method also allows you to know exactly how many calories in whiskey you’re consuming.

Tonic: If you’ve ever heard your uncle order a ‘whiskey & water’ he means tonic water. Although regular tonic water is not a high calorie drink, making the switch to diet tonic water will allow you to enjoy this drink without adding any extra calories to the whiskey.

Soda: The calories in whiskey as well as the taste makes soda an obvious choice for a mixer, but the calories in soda can really increase the calories in a cocktail. The good news about this however is that the simple switch to diet soda, which has zero calories, can keep the calories in whiskey as low as possible.

Low Calorie Cocktails

Now that you know how many calories in whiskey as well as the proper serving size of whiskey, you can begin to create (and order) low calorie cocktails that highlight whiskey. Just remember that for cocktails like whiskey on the rocks and whiskey & water to use top shelf whiskey or you may end up choosing a high calorie mixer to mask the taste of the alcohol.

Now here are a few cocktails that keep the calories in whiskey low so you can enjoy a night out with friends.
