Obesity and Sleep Apnea are co-related in such a way that one can cause the other. The resulting health related disorders are so severe if this cycle goes on, that, controlling weight gain or obesity with changed lifestyles is the only remedy. It is more common in obese people and this in turn causes obesity. Weight loss can correct the underlying causes of both obesity and Sleep Apnea reducing the severity of debilitating health problems like cardiovascular disease, stroke, high BP, arrhythmias, diabetes, and sleep deprived automobile accidents.
What is Sleep Apnea?
It is a sleeping disorder that, while breathing during sleep, it is interrupted by one or more pauses or it is very shallow and abnormally low. Here the sleeper is unaware of the stoppage of breath which can last for a few seconds or even a few minutes. These stoppages can continue up to 100 times a night. Breathing may also be shallow when sufficient air does not reach the lungs. Sleep disordered breathing refers to both these chronic conditions of apnea and hypnopea. When sleeping is interrupted by breathing stoppages or pauses it is Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), whereas OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when there is a physical block in the airflow even while making an effort to breathe. Complex or mixed Sleep Apnea is a combination of both these conditions.
Obesity and Sleep Apnea
The obese are at a high risk of Sleep Apnea. Obesity causes fat to be stored around the neck making the airway smaller and breathing difficult. Loud snoring and sometimes even complete cessation of breathing can occur, leading to death. Overweight people have a lot of body fat which can cause inflammation. Around the neck, this inflammation will cause this. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypnopea Syndrome (OSAHS) is widely prevalent, but it often remains undiagnosed. Obese men and aging people are more at risk for this sleeping disorder. Obesity in women who measure more than 35" at the waist and men who measure more than 40" are highly prone to it. Obesity is associated with Sleep Apnea in such a way that it also causes obesity, because the disorder leads to derangement of eating habits hormones, increasing body weight. Often when your family members are subject to both, it is important to control your own weight.
Keep Fit
It is a serious chronic condition which can be improved by strict healthy eating habits. Foods high in nutrients and fiber, like fruits and vegetables and whole-grains are beneficial. Low fat meat and low fat diary products can also be consumed to prevent and control weight gain. Weight loss of even 10 to 20 pounds can improve health and reduce the severity of this. Increased physical activity by daily exercising for 30 minutes can be achieved in short spurts of exercises for 10 or 20 minutes. Taking short walks or using the stair instead of an elevator can go a long way to maintain physical fitness.
Awareness of Signs/Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
Symptoms of this are often misdiagnosed or not directed always to the disorder. So it passes by unawares because a sufferer of this is conditioned to daytime fatigue from a disturbed night's sleep. They suffer listlessness, slower reactions, have difficulty in paying attention, experience memory loss all of which can result in depression and mood swings. Often, these symptoms resulting in cognitive impairment are totally ignored although both children and adults experience them. When this sleeping disorder is suspected it is best to talk to a health care provider and do a sleep study in a sleep lab. Sleep Apnea chronic conditions should then be tested and detected by a sleep specialist without delay.
Our brain cells need continuous oxygen to live. If while asleep the blood oxygen level goes as low as to cause brain damage it can lead to death. Uncontrolled weight gain or untreated Sleep Apnea are both chronic conditions which if left unheeded can cut short or impair your life forever.
