Let's face it. Losing weight poses as a significant challenge to most people. It requires a diligent commitment and a lot of self-discipline. There are ways to make losing weight easier and to set yourself up for success instead of repeated disappointments. Here are nine simple ways to better arm yourself in the war against weight and put your goals within reach.

1. Rid your home of all unhealthy and counterproductive foods. You know which ones they are; you probably felt guilty when you purchased them. Dispose of anything like chips, candy, kids cereal or other foods that you will be tempted to indulge in at one point or another. Foods high in sodium, calories and sugar should be the first to hit the trash. You might be interested in keeping a running total of the money you have spent on unhealthy, fattening junk foods as you clean out your refrigerator and pantry. These foods are bad for you in more ways than one.

2. Be an all-around smart shopper. You of course want to stay within the realm of your financial budget, but start making a habit out of reading all the labels on the foods you buy. Gear your spending habits toward high quality and natural ingredients. Try spending more time in the produce aisle than anywhere else. Don't just plan healthy meals to lose weight, but include all snacks and beverages. Analyze what you buy until you are well practiced in buying the foods that will work with your body and weight loss efforts.

3. Always drink at least one glass of water before every meal. This is a healthy habit for anyone, and those trying to lose weight will find it helps to fill them up long before the end of a meal. Try a glass of water with lemon or other flavoring after eating to aid in digestion and keep you from being tempted by dangerous desserts.

4. Whenever possible, enjoy meals at a relaxed pace. This allows your body to know when you are full before you pass that point, and it is also much better for the digestive process. Eating slowly also gives you some stress-free time in your day, which is a vital aspect of any healthy diet. When you eat on the run or in a hurry, you simply do not put thought into what you are eating or how much of it.

5. One of the smartest things anyone trying to lose weight can do is to cut soda out of their diet. Do not pick it up at a grocery store in bulk or convenience store in single servings. Avoid buying soda from vending machines at work or ordering it in a restaurant. Put plainly, soda is pure calories and sugar and completely unnecessary to begin with. If you are serious about losing weight, you need to seriously reconsider your relationship with soda, including diet soda.

6. Sleep well and for the recommended number of hours. Quality sleep is vital to your physical and mental restoration. When you are overtired you tend to slack off, eat poorly and avoid physical activity. Prepare yourself for a successful day of dieting by getting a good night's sleep.

7. Have a support network and include other people who are trying to lose weight. Call one of them when you feel inclined to give in or give up. Any friend who will offer words of encouragement when you need it will do. If possible, partner with a fellow dieter and challenge and motivate each other. Supportive friends can make a big difference in your successful weight loss.

8. Enjoy healthy, low calorie snacks that will give you energy throughout your day. Good snacks will keep you away from the evil ones and provide your body with extra oomph so that you will chose the stairs over the elevator, or park your car far from a store entrance so that you can walk awhile. Smart snacking will not just reduce your daily total of calories, but will help you function better, and that will work wonders in a number of ways.

9. Complement every meal you have with a walk. A short stroll around the block, campus or building you work in should suffice. It will help work off a few calories and boost your energy and the confidence you have in your weight loss abilities. After each meal, you should be able to look back with satisfaction at what you ate, and after each walk you will feel stronger in your pursuit of a healthier and thinner self.
