Sally is a self-proclaimed "Serial Dieter."

She says she's been on every popular diet that's come out in the last 15 years.

"And," she says, "none of them have ever worked for me. Not in the long run."

"How do you go about those diets?" I asked her.

"What do you mean? I just get the book or sign up for the program and try my best to follow it as best as I can. But it's always hard for me, I never see the results I want, and I quit...and then start looking for the next diet. The one I hope will actually work for me."

"How would you describe your personality?" I asked her.

"Vivacious. Outgoing. People person. Not too disciplined. And I hate routine and structure...I'm more of a free spirit. Creative. Spontaneous."

"When you try a new diet, " I said, "do you use your personality to help you stick with the diet longer and be more successful with it?"

"No. I'm not even sure if I know what that means. I just try to follow the diet. If it says eat this and that today, I do my best to eat this and that."

I said, "So you try to diet without giving yourself permission to be vivacious, a people person, and spontaneous, I guess? In other words, although in reality you have complete control over your diet - you can do it any way you want to - you let the rules of the diet dictate how you do it rather than using your natural tendencies and strengths - that 'vivacious' you - to make it fun for you. To suit your natural tendencies, traits, and characteristics."

"Yeah," she said. "You're right. Never thought of it like that."

"No wonder you fail," I said.

Experts around the world are now proving, that one of the most important factors - if not THE most important factor - in your ability to lose weight is your personality.

By taking a 15 to 30 minute walk instead of watching TV for those same 15 to 30 minutes, you get a little stronger.

If you're cleaning your house, try doing it a little faster, try scrubbing a little harder, throw in some dance moves while dusting this time. Voila, you get a little stronger.

When you are watching TV, get out of your chair and do some mild stretching - you get a little stronger.

You can come up with a hundred ways to get a little stronger every day without making any significant changes in your normal life or routines.

Sure, these are very small things - small investments of time and energy. But they're doable and sustainable. It's not like setting your alarm for 5:00 AM and rushing to the gym for an hour long, agonizing workout. (Which, by the way, is great if you can and will do it. But most people won't - not for long anyway.)

But if you stick with the little Get Stronger things over time, they'll pay off in big ways. Bigger than going to the gym for 2 months and then quitting because it's too much work and such a hassle.

And be sure to fit these small investments in Getting Stronger into your unique, natural personality, pace, and priorities, too. Before long they'll be second nature and you'll be getting stronger all of the time on auto-pilot.
