Top 5 Diets That Actually Work

by Bob Wilkiein Health / Weight Loss    (submitted 2012-01-27)

There are many diets circulating here and there such that it is sometimes hard to determine diets that work. Which diets actually do work? Here is a list of diets that have compelling reasons as to why they work, what examples of food each diet can contain, and for whom they are best fitted:

1. Macrobiotic Diet: The macrobiotic diet is one of the many diets that work. It consists of foods that are high in fiber and low in fat. Many people engage in this diet because this diet does not only aid in making the body lose weight, but also enhances self-discipline and spirituality. Foods involved in this diet are whole grains and vegetables grown in season. Another beauty of this system is that it is not deficient in calories - it can provide the body with enough energy so that it can still perform daily activities and exercises well. The diet can also include some fish for proteins.

2. Organic Diet: An organic diet is, again, one of the many diets that work; the word "organic" has a beauty in itself that never fails to capture the attention of anyone willing to go on a diet. What does "organic diet" mean? It means that the foods served do not contain pesticides, herbicides, or any other artificial preservatives. No processed foods, no trans-fats, and no artificial flavors. The diet consists of fruits, vegetables, grains, and meat items that are treated organically. Such a diet aids in weight loss as well as protects the body from the harmful effects of some food additives and chemicals.

3. Glycemic diet: This diet is one of the diets that work - for diabetics. Emphasis of this diet is the presence of carbohydrates best fit for diabetics. The diet encourages consumption of foods whose carbohydrates contain a low glycemic index (the measure of how carbohydrates in the bloodstream can raise blood sugar). Foods included in this diet include whole grains, vegetables, fruits, skim milk, and some types of pasta.

4. Nutrisystem: One of the most versatile diets that work is the Nutrisystem diet. This system consists of foods that have a low glycemic index, protein-rich food, and food rich in fiber. This is different from other diets in which the one undergoing this diet has to eat five small meals a day (mandatory). Examples of food that can be included in this system includes oatmeal (the specialized apple and cinnamon Nutrisystem oatmeal), sweet potatoes with cheese, and soup made from cream of broccoli.

5. South Beach Diet: Who can forget one of the most popular diets that work, the South Beach diet? Here is how South Beach works: First, dieters start out with food with few carbohydrates and plenty of protein. Then two weeks after, dieters add more carbohydrates into their plan. The system intends to instruct dieters regarding nutrient density of foods and the sizes of healthy portions of foods. For the beginning phase, foods included may be vegetables, fish, beef, eggs, and nuts; the second phase includes all foods in the beginning phase along with bread, potatoes, and chocolate.
