How Many Calories In Schnapps? – Counting Calories In Schnapps

By Rob Poulos...

When it comes to mixing drinks, very few mixers are as beloved as schnapps. These strong, flavored alcoholic drinks can add just the right hint of fruit to any cocktail.

Although many people mistakenly believe that schnapps are liqueur, they are in fact plain old alcohol. However the difference depends on where you are; in Germany schnapps is a generic word for liquor or specifically referring to fruit brandy. In the U.S. schnapps are categorized as liqueur.

Types of Schnapps

There are plenty of varieties of schnapps available on the market, in a wide variety of flavors. The most common flavors of schnapps are probably apple and peach, which many love to drink without the aid of any other type of alcohol.

Here is a list of the most common flavors of schnapps available;

With such a selection of schnapps at your fingertips the only thing you need now is to find out how many calories in schnapps so you can enhance the flavor of your favorite cocktail.

Calories in Schnapps

The calories in schnapps vary slightly by the alcohol content of the specific type of schnapps, but in general schnapps have between 15% and 30% alcohol by volume, which means they range from 40 to 50 proof.

Because schnapps are slightly higher in calories than most hard liquor they will still add a significant amount of calories to any cocktail. Of course the specific number of calories in schnapps will depend on the amount used in a cocktail as well as the alcohol content and a wide variety of other factors.

Sauer Apfel® schnapps for example is 40-proof with 72 calories per ounce, while strawberry schnapps is 48-proof yet also has 72 calories.

Below are the number of calories in schnapps most commonly used;

There are many other, less common, types of schnapps, but the general range of calories in schnapps is illustrated in this chart.

Serving Size

Cocktails that contain schnapps don’t follow any set criteria for serving size, however if you want to make sure the calories in schnapps don’t add up too quickly you should follow cocktail recipes to the ounce. Smaller cocktails shouldn’t require more than one ounce of schnapps unless the main alcohol in the cocktail is a type of schnapps.

Serving size is important because if you double or triple the quantity that goes into your glass, it will be that much more difficult to count calories for weight loss. Successful weight loss requires that you get as close as possible to an exact calorie count.

Cocktails

One of the best ways to minimize the calories in schnapps is to make shots. While these cocktails won’t likely last long, they’re strong enough that you should find it easy to enjoy a glass of water between cocktails to keep you hydrated and not too tipsy.

You can increase the measurements of these cocktails and enjoy them in a cocktail glass, just remember that this will increase the number of calories in schnapps cocktails. Don’t take my word for it however, the number of calories in specific schnapps’ are listed in the chart above.

Keep in mind that while it is okay to enjoy a higher calorie cocktail once in awhile, your weight loss efforts will be less impacted if you consume a well balanced diet complete with fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy, lean proteins and whole grains and combine it with regular physical activity.

Because schnapps is liquor remember that it jumps the line in front of carbohydrates and other sources of energy so the more you drink, the more of those other energy sources are converted and stored in your problem areas, as fat.
