XWLS: Extreme Weight Loss Syndrome: Do you suffer from this?

Losing weight is NOT as difficult as millions of people make it. Regardless of how you look at it - from multiple cardio and workout gadgets to thousands of " lose 10lbs in 7 days" type diets; it still comes down to one fundamental concept to achieve sustainable weight loss: the number of calories you burn versus the number of calories you are consume.

I think the issue is that people are just not educated on basic nutrition so I try to educate my clients on basic concepts like what is a calorie, what foods are classified as protein, fats and carbohydrates and why our bodies need all of these.

Due to the lack of knowledge about nutrition and proper exercise, millions of Americans are suffering with XWLS "Extreme Weight Loss Syndrome." Some of the characteristics of XWLS is as follows:
1. Willingness to try very low calorie (below 1200kcal) or low Carb diets and feeling this is the ONLY way to lose weight.
2. Working out everyday and sometimes twice a day in hopes of burning fat faster.
3. Losing less than 3 lbs a week and feel like they should have lost more.
4. Weighing-in everyday (sometimes multiple times a day).
5. Opting for surgery, diet pills, etc. and not having the patience required to lose weight the right way.

With these characteristics in mind, XWLS can lead to health issues, depression, anxiety, low self esteem, frustration and multiple injuries.

3 Proven Methods of Weight Loss

Unless you suffer with thyroid issues or certain other medical conditions (which may play a small role in your weight loss goal) there is only ONE sure way to lose weight: Burn more calories than you consume. There are only 3 proven methods to help you lose weight and KEEP IT OFF!

1. BMR or Basal Metabolic Rate: Learn how many calories your body needs just to maintain your current weight. Once you find this out, subtract 250-300 calories (women)/ 250-500 calories (men) from your total amount of Daily calories or BMR

2. ADL or Active Daily Living- Stay active. Lift weights, swim, cut the grass, ride a bike, play a sport; anything that can keep you moving. The CDC (Center of Disease Control) suggests you stay active at least 30 minutes to 1 hour every day. If you lift weights or use any other form of resistance training, the rule is to lift weights every other day to give your body enough time to recover. This varies according to your fitness level.

3. TEF or Thermic Effect of Foods. Your body naturally burns calories just to digest food. Studies show that fat is easy to process so it burns the least amount of calories and since protein is the hardest to process, it burns the greatest amount of calories.
