What Is the Best Way to Exercise for Weight Control?

ByDavid Donahoo

Exercise is needed when you want control your weight. It is like two things going together and depending on each other. This is know as "Interdependence". This is where you are both dependent on a thing as well as being independent. It is like a good fitting glove. You depend on it when you have the glove on, but when you do not need the glove you are independent of it.

There are many research articles that show the connection between exercise and metabolism,. Through exercise you get the muscles moving so they can burn up fat, reduce weight and to get rid of negative emotions like frustration and depression. So it seems like exercise really is a task that everyone should be doing. In general I do agree.

However, exercise is one of those generic terms that mean nothing without the context of where it is done. In other words you need to be aware of what your situation is, where you are and how you are feeling, to decide what exercise is best for you to do to gain its benefits.

Imagine you do not like going to the gym. It is not a place you feel very comfortable and safe, the equipment is confusing and you don't like people to see you when you perspire. If that was the context for your exercise, you would not enjoy doing it. Instead you would probably find many reasons for not going. It does not matter whether the equipment is top range and can work all parts of the body, if you do not want to be there, then it will probably do little for you.

In another case I heard a person doing a weight control class, you need to exercise. If you do not like it, then just "suck it up" and do it. I know that if I was told this I would be more motivated to not exercise and not go back to that person.

So what can you do instead? Find exercises that you like to do, can do, feel safe to do and you are willing to do.

I do pilates once a week. I do it to strengthen my core muscles around the waist. Having done this for a number of years it has stopped my back from having the problems it use to have. Do I enjoy pilates? Sort of! I know it does me a lot of good, but some of the routines we do in class can be quite challenging and sometimes I find it hard to keep going. But I am willing to do it and focus on its benefits.

But my situation is very different to where you may disliking an exercise intensely. I dislike swimming. I find it hard to do, I do not do it well and I struggle. This is different to pilates where I am happy to go back every week because I know it is stopping me from going to the chiropractor and keeps me fit.

What exercises come to mind that you feel you are able to do, rather than what you are told to do and you dislike? It may be challenging, but are you willing to do it and see the benefits for you to lose weight and gain fitness.

Examples of useful exercises that are not your normal gym exercises are:
- Pilates
- Bike riding (outdoors)
- Dancing
- Yoga
- Vacuuming
- Walking quickly around the shopping center
- Walking to speak to someone at work rather than calling them or emailing.

Use your mind and think about the exercises you are interested in doing and then find the way to do it regularly.
