If you are one of the millions of people the world over who are constantly battling with their weight set aside a few moments now to give some thought to why this is. The reasons are in many instances so evident that it's easy to miss them completely.
In this post I'm going to propose four reasons why you may be overweight and how to deal with them.
Reason 1: You're not eating the right kind of breakfast foods
Research shows that those individuals who usually consume a healthy and balanced breakfast find it easier to control their weight. If you eat breakfast but often find yourself feeling hunger pangs again 2 hours later it may well be you're not eating the right variety of foods in the morning. Think about what you have for breakfast on an average day. Be truthful. Is it full of fat, salt or sugar? Is it short on fibre? Is it healthy and balanced or are you loading up with empty calories? Or worse still, do you avoid breakfast completely?
If you want to ensure you have the energy you need to cope with your active day you should make an effort to include things like complex carbohydrates in your breakfast. Foods that are rich in fibre are likely to belong to this class. Porridge oats are a perfect choice, and whole fiber and bran based cereals that are not as easy to absorb and take your body longer to digest. The process of digestion needs time to work and you will continue to feel satisfied while your body is carrying out this task.
Many people eat insufficient fibre and an excess of sugary food, in particular at breakfast time and this is why we feel hungry more quickly than we are expecting.
Reason 2: You're bored
Most snacking occurs due to boredom. We have all been guilty of it. Sometimes we don't even take note that we've munched our way through a huge bag of crisps. It's a destructive habit to get caught in and a difficult one to escape. The smart thing to do is to try to distract yourself when you find yourself with nothing to do. Play cards or a game, take a stroll, read the sunday paper or start that new knitting pattern. I always keep a small book of sudoku puzzles with me to keep myself entertained so I'm not tempted to snack whenever I'm at a loose end. If you have lots of time to spare, try volunteering at a local charitable organization or join a class and learn something new and useful.
Reason 3: You're eating too fast
It does take 10 - 15 minutes for the tummy to convey to your brain that it's full. Many of us eat our meal way too quickly, consequently consuming more than we actually need. Our brain hasn't had sufficient time to register the food we have consumed. Take things slower. Play some restful music as you eat, or make time to chat about your day with family members and friends over a leisurely dinner. By going slower you will enjoy your food more and greatly improve digestion and when you finish your meal, you can expect to feel fuller and more satisfied.
Thanks to busier life styles, a lot of us are starving hungry by the point we sit down for our lunch or dinner. Carry a healthy snack with you so that you can keep hunger under control until mealtimes. Taking the edge of your hunger will mean you are less likely to wolf down your food too quickly.
Reason 4: You're depressed
A number of people eat because they are unhappy or down. Food can provide comfort but it won't remedy anything and will in all probability makes things worse if the primary reason for your depression is because you're dissatisfied with your weight and your body. If you think maybe you're eating because you are low, speak about it to someone, a friend, family member or your doctor and open up about your problems. Being overweight can get you down in the dumps but only you have the power to change your downs to ups. About the Author
