5 Reasons Your Diet Will Fail

ByJ.D. Riggs

You've lost the battle and don't even know it yet.

Diet failures happen just about as frequently as New Year's resolutions are made. The sad fact is that they most typically fail even before the diet is in full swing.

There are numerous factors as to why this happens, but there are 5 that really stand out.

Are you really, truly committed? The fact is, while most folks start out committed to weight loss, the novelty, or newness of change quickly wears off as the reality of changes starts to set in. We're creatures of habit. We like what we know and are used to. When you introduce wholesale changes to what and how your going to eat, it's a major psychological leap you've just asked your mind (and body!) to make. Many of us are not emotionally equipped to adjust to such change. So what really brings about true commitment? Meaningful and realistic goals. Creating smaller changes for example may make it easier to absorb and when you see success, it will embolden you to create more change.

Do you have a plan? Most first time dieters assume they can simply adjust their eating habits easily. Claims are made: "I'll eat healthier", "I'll eat smaller portions", etc. Very few, if any really get past the stage of such declarations. Why? Because our perspective of what eating "healthy" and "smaller portions" are, are distorted. Why then are we overweight in the first place? Having a highly structured plan, with specific recipes and weight/calorie portions is key. In a sense, it's like we're re training ourselves how to eat properly. Linking back to commitment, finding the right plan, and evaluating the recipe variety are very important! After all, your going to want to eat the food in the plan and not feel "cheated".

Finding foods that fit. Nearly every successful diet plan will include an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Here is where the fun comes in: Explore new foods and vegetables. Try recipes that sound good to you that include some lesser known, but healthy food items. You are likely to find some new friends to serve up on your plate. Having an open mind helps here, as this is the part where your going to challenge yourself with change. If your stubborn on trying new foods, and expanding your taste horizons, then you could very well sabotage your best intentions. Be courageous!

DON'T tell your friends. Say what? Why would I not want to tell my friends about this great choice I finally decided to make? The reality with weight loss is the social pressure to lose weight fast. If you've just told your co-workers, friends or loved ones that your starting this journey, sure they will be supportive for the most part. However, if you don't lose weight fast enough, or struggle at the beginning, you've set yourself up for receiving looks or even words from others as to why you haven't lost any weight yet. Don't do this to yourself! Stay below the radar and just begin your plan. When someone notices a few weeks later that something is different about you, you'll feel AWESOME! But still keep it a secret. Keep the pressure off yourself and just focus on following your plan. When it becomes undeniable that your losing weight to others, then, and ONLY then, disclose that you've made some food changes - BUT, don't say that your on a diet. Just say that your eating better. Keep that social pressure off, remember?

Set clear goals. Without question, if you don't have a place to go, how are you going to know once you get there? When setting goals, be realistic. Set short term goals around eating habits alone - don't focus on weight loss yet. Set goals to help train yourself around this new method of eating. As an example, say that you will eat 5 - 8oz meals a day for one week. Stick to that and then reset your goal. Don't set weight goals early on as that can quickly kill your plans early on. Focus on the re-training aspect until it feels comfortable to you. Once your in the swing of it, then expand your challenges around exercise and activities. Get out and walk each evening for 30 minutes. Play driveway basketball with your kids each day after work. Find activities that are fun and enjoyable. Me? I hate the gym. I'd rather be outside hiking a trail, or bicycling. Set short term goals for success!

From my experience, these 5 areas are the foundations for either making or breaking your goal to lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle. If your contemplating taking this step, I congratulate you! But first, be sure to seriously consider the above. I think you'll find greater happiness and success if you do!

4 Reasons Why You May Be Overweight

ByEunice L Mwangi

If like many people you've found it hard to shed those extra pounds it may be time to think about precisely why you are struggling to control your weight. The reasons are often so glaringly obvious that most of us miss them altogether.

In this post I'm going to offer 4 possible explanations and how to overcome them.

Reason #1: You're not eating the right variety of breakfast foods

Studies show that those individuals who usually eat a well-balanced breakfast generally find it much easier to maintain a healthy weight. If you eat breakfast but then find yourself feeling hunger pangs again 2 hours later it could be you just aren't eating the appropriate kind of foods at the start of the day. Look at what you have for breakfast on a typical day. Tell the truth. Is it high in fat, salt or sugar? Is it low in fibre? Is it wholesome or are you filling up with empty calories? Or even worse, do you forget breakfast totally?

If you want to ensure that you have the energy you need to cope with your demanding day you really should aim to include complex carbohydrates in your breakfast. Foods that are loaded with fibre are likely to fall into this group. Porridge oats are a great choice, and whole grain as are bran rich cereals which are not as easy to absorb, meaning your body takes longer to digest them. The process of digestion needs time and you'll continue to feel full while your body is occupied with this important task. Most of us don't eat enough fibre and a lot of sugary food, especially at breakfast, and for this reason we experience hunger far sooner than we expect.

Reason #2: You're not keeping yourself occupied

Most snacking occurs as a result of boredom. We have all done it. Often times we are mindful, sometimes we don't even realise that we've scoffed our way through an enormous bag of snacks. It's a terrible habit to fall into and it's hard to get out of. The best thing to do is to attempt to occupy yourself when you find yourself with time on your hands. Play cards, go for a walk, read a magazine or start that new book you got for Christmas. I always keep a small book of crosswords with me to keep myself busy. If you have a significant amount of time on your hands, try helping out at a local charitable organization or investing your efforts in learning a new skill.

Reason #3: You're eating too fast

It will take 10 to 15 minutes for the belly to inform your brain that it's full up. Many of us eat our meal too fast, consequently eating more than we need. Our brain hasn't had enough time to register the food we have taken in. Take your time. Play some calming music while you eat, or take some time to chat about your day with your family members and friends between mouthfuls. By taking your time you will greatly improve digestion and when you finish your meal, you will feel full and completely satisfied. Due to more busy day-to-day lives, many people are starving hungry by the time they sit down to lunch or dinner and this can result in over-eating. Keep a healthy snack with you so as to keep hunger away until mealtimes.

Reason #4: You eat for emotional reasons

A lot of people eat because they are down in the dumps or low-spirited. Food does offer a comforting effect however won't solve anything and will probably increase your problems if the primary reason for your sadness is because you are disillusioned with your weight and your physical appearance. If you think you're eating too much because you are low, discuss it with someone, friends, a member of the family or your general practitioner and get the help and support you need to break out of this negative cycle.

Being fat can make you feel bad but only you have the ability make positive changes. Keep your body and mind active. Join an exercise class. Do a really hard sudoku puzzle. Set yourself a new challenge every day. 5 minutes running yesterday, six minutes today. Fabulous. Now you're on the road to doing something about your weight problem, keep it up!

4 Reasons Why You Can't Lose Weight

by Eunice Mwangiin Health / Weight Loss    (submitted 2012-01-29)

If you are one of the millions of people the world over who are constantly battling with their weight set aside a few moments now to give some thought to why this is. The reasons are in many instances so evident that it's easy to miss them completely.

In this post I'm going to propose four reasons why you may be overweight and how to deal with them.

Reason 1: You're not eating the right kind of breakfast foods

Research shows that those individuals who usually consume a healthy and balanced breakfast find it easier to control their weight. If you eat breakfast but often find yourself feeling hunger pangs again 2 hours later it may well be you're not eating the right variety of foods in the morning. Think about what you have for breakfast on an average day. Be truthful. Is it full of fat, salt or sugar? Is it short on fibre? Is it healthy and balanced or are you loading up with empty calories? Or worse still, do you avoid breakfast completely?

If you want to ensure you have the energy you need to cope with your active day you should make an effort to include things like complex carbohydrates in your breakfast. Foods that are rich in fibre are likely to belong to this class. Porridge oats are a perfect choice, and whole fiber and bran based cereals that are not as easy to absorb and take your body longer to digest. The process of digestion needs time to work and you will continue to feel satisfied while your body is carrying out this task.

Many people eat insufficient fibre and an excess of sugary food, in particular at breakfast time and this is why we feel hungry more quickly than we are expecting.

Reason 2: You're bored

Most snacking occurs due to boredom. We have all been guilty of it. Sometimes we don't even take note that we've munched our way through a huge bag of crisps. It's a destructive habit to get caught in and a difficult one to escape. The smart thing to do is to try to distract yourself when you find yourself with nothing to do. Play cards or a game, take a stroll, read the sunday paper or start that new knitting pattern. I always keep a small book of sudoku puzzles with me to keep myself entertained so I'm not tempted to snack whenever I'm at a loose end. If you have lots of time to spare, try volunteering at a local charitable organization or join a class and learn something new and useful.

Reason 3: You're eating too fast

It does take 10 - 15 minutes for the tummy to convey to your brain that it's full. Many of us eat our meal way too quickly, consequently consuming more than we actually need. Our brain hasn't had sufficient time to register the food we have consumed. Take things slower. Play some restful music as you eat, or make time to chat about your day with family members and friends over a leisurely dinner. By going slower you will enjoy your food more and greatly improve digestion and when you finish your meal, you can expect to feel fuller and more satisfied.

Thanks to busier life styles, a lot of us are starving hungry by the point we sit down for our lunch or dinner. Carry a healthy snack with you so that you can keep hunger under control until mealtimes. Taking the edge of your hunger will mean you are less likely to wolf down your food too quickly.

Reason 4: You're depressed

A number of people eat because they are unhappy or down. Food can provide comfort but it won't remedy anything and will in all probability makes things worse if the primary reason for your depression is because you're dissatisfied with your weight and your body. If you think maybe you're eating because you are low, speak about it to someone, a friend, family member or your doctor and open up about your problems. Being overweight can get you down in the dumps but only you have the power to change your downs to ups. About the Author

Reasons Why Most People Fail at Weight Loss

ByGreg Muir

Expert Author Greg Muir

So why is it that so many people who start out to lose weight end up failing? This for me is very interesting and something I want to look into further. It can't be an individual factor because there's such a high failure rate but I'm sure every example has its own aspects as to why this is happening. When I talk about being individual I'm talking about us as being individuals with our own personal issues but at the same time there seems to be a consistent pattern forming with all who set out to lose weight.

What could the issue be? Being lazy, that could be it what about enjoying food too much, the wrong sort of course. Being unmotivated or just find it all too overwhelming. Let's take a close look.

I think when people undertake the challenge of losing weight their motivation or reasons for doing this are focused in the wrong areas. Most people just want to look better which is fine but for me that's the wrong way of looking at it. I believe a lot of overweight people don't really understand the risks involved with being overweight, or they just don't care about themselves or the people around them as they suffer every day seeing what you try to hide from yourself.

Being overweight kills thousands each and every year and costs the respective governments around the world huge amounts of money. Studies have shown being overweight and the risks involved all come to the same conclusion, by losing weight (and I'm talking a lot of weight here) gives you the opportunity to prolong your life while being healthier and happier than before. If you can be aware of the health risks involved with being overweight this alone should be enough motivation for you to get off your butt and get the results. If you have children this should be even more motivation for you.

Most people tend to look at a diet as a once off event and not a lifestyle choice, this way of thinking can be a big mistake and will most likely hurt you in the long run. If you think you only need to diet for a short time what will happen when that timeframe is done? Most likely things will go back to normal unless you're really committed to change.

There's a lot of conflicting information out there today and I think that has a lot to do with people getting confused as to what's best for them. Take this pill or do this diet without the need of exercise and be amazed with the results, this is just a load of hype and will get you sucked in.

The real proven way to lose weight is with a weight loss plan that includes a diet and daily tasks. Doing this will give you a focused game plan to get you to where you need to go. When it comes to weight loss I don't like to use words like want or like as this gives you an option. In reality you shouldn't have an option whether you want to lose weight or not.

A lot of people don't even know how many calories they consume each and every day and being confused with what to do or eat can make the whole journey hard especially if you're doing it on your own. If you're ready to stop making excuses and find the right motivation and drive to make things happen you're ready for the next step.
