Why Many People Are Unhappy Even After Losing Weight

by James Woolleyin Health / Weight Loss    (submitted 2012-01-28)

Many people assume that if they can manage to lose a decent amount of weight, they will automatically feel a lot happier and will be more content. However as many people have discovered for themselves over the years, it doesn't always work out this way. In some instances you can still feel depressed even after hitting your targets, and sometimes it can actually cause depression.

So what are the main reasons for this underlying depression?

Well it can never be pinpointed to one precise thing. There will often be a couple of reasons why you feel depressed.

First of all if you have undergone a huge weight loss program and managed to lose several stone in weight, you may well look a lot better than you did before. However you may notice one side effect that you hadn't anticipated before you started this program - saggy skin.

The trouble is that when you slim down a lot and all the fat magically disappears, the skin doesn't necessary shrink back to its original size. When you put on weight originally, your skin will have stretched and expanded to accommodate this new weight, but when you lose this weight you're left with many layers of saggy skin. So this can obviously make you feel pretty depressed.

Of course this generally only applies if you have lost several stone in weight. If you have lost maybe a stone or two at the most, then saggy skin is unlikely to be a problem. Nevertheless you can still be depressed because you may find that losing weight has not papered over the cracks of other problems in your life, like you hoped it might. Sadly this is a common occurrence, and can often lead to subsequent weight gain if you are not careful.

One final reason why shedding a few pounds can actually lead to depression is because some people are never happy with how they look. They will constantly be looking in the mirror and analysing photos of themselves picking up on any small faults, and subsequently feeling miserable about these problems.

So just because they have lost weight and now look a lot better because of this, they may still feel depressed because they will just move on to the next problem. It never really comes to an end either because some people are never happy with their appearance, and this will obviously continue as you get older because your natural beauty will start to fade anyway.

To avoid this happening to you, I suggest you seek help if you think you might suffer from this problem yourself. It is actually quite common amongst women, and it can also affect quite a lot of men as well, even though they may not admit it.

The point is that you should not assume that getting into shape by losing weight will be the answer to all of your problems. Yes you may well look a lot better, and part of you may be a little happier, but you may still suffer from depression in one form or another. So this is something you should bear in mind whenever you start a new weight loss program. About the Author

The 8 Stupidest Fat Loss Mistakes People Make and How to Avoid Them

ByCody Cross

Expert Author Cody Cross

1. Not planning. "I don't know what my triggers are, what my danger situations are that cause me to lose my healthy focus or want to overeat."

Fix: Take ten minutes every night before bedtime to plan your schedule and your diet for the next day. Include accomplishing the single most effective thing you could reasonably do to help you lose weight and get healthy. Consider possible food and eating triggers you might run into and plan a workaround.

2. Fixing mood with food. "I'm feeling blue, so let's have cake."

Fix: Eat healthy food regularly throughout the day. Make sure you have supportive people in your life to talk to and reach out to them. Conversely, make sure you are truly supportive of others, too, as it can do wonders for your mood. Get professional help if you need it.

3. Avoiding exercise. "I'll start that workout routine next week..."

Fix: Start slowly, perhaps start by walking a little daily, if only for ten minutes. Check out the types of exercise that take only a few minutes a week (high intensity training) if time is an issue, or conversely those that are easiest, like walking, if the stress and strain of exercise is an issue.

4. Looking for the next big fat fix. "As soon as I start my gym membership, or new diet technique, I'll be able to really start losing weight."

Fix: Right now ask yourself what you will do today or tomorrow that will most effectively move you toward health. Write it down in your evening planning session. Ask this same question again every evening.

5. Dreaming about sugary food/junk food. "Mmmm, donuts!"

Fix: Without waiting, eat a pickle, some celery with peanut butter, an avocado, etc. Keep these and other healthy snacks around to head off cravings, which lead to poor food choices.

6. Swinging your insulin. "I'm going to eat lots of sugar/simple carbs, even though I may not feel so energetic a half hour after."

Fix: Learn what foods cause these swings for you, try stabilizing supplements like cinnamon and chromium. In your nightly planning session, always plan frequent healthy eating throughout the day.

7. Packing in junk food during a hunger attack. Acting like a "Cookie Monster."

Fix: Plan for eating quality food before you are really hungry. Develop better awareness of your body's subtle hunger clues. Eat a reasonable amount slowly, and then wait at least 20 minutes before you eat more.

8. Allowing poor food buying habits. "Oh, that looks gooooood...I need three...!"

Fix: Hit the healthy fresh food sections of the grocery store first. Only go to the store after you've eaten well. Have plans and recipes for fixing fresh healthy meals and smaller frequent health snacks to keep you happy all day.

Reasons Why Most People Fail at Weight Loss

ByGreg Muir

Expert Author Greg Muir

So why is it that so many people who start out to lose weight end up failing? This for me is very interesting and something I want to look into further. It can't be an individual factor because there's such a high failure rate but I'm sure every example has its own aspects as to why this is happening. When I talk about being individual I'm talking about us as being individuals with our own personal issues but at the same time there seems to be a consistent pattern forming with all who set out to lose weight.

What could the issue be? Being lazy, that could be it what about enjoying food too much, the wrong sort of course. Being unmotivated or just find it all too overwhelming. Let's take a close look.

I think when people undertake the challenge of losing weight their motivation or reasons for doing this are focused in the wrong areas. Most people just want to look better which is fine but for me that's the wrong way of looking at it. I believe a lot of overweight people don't really understand the risks involved with being overweight, or they just don't care about themselves or the people around them as they suffer every day seeing what you try to hide from yourself.

Being overweight kills thousands each and every year and costs the respective governments around the world huge amounts of money. Studies have shown being overweight and the risks involved all come to the same conclusion, by losing weight (and I'm talking a lot of weight here) gives you the opportunity to prolong your life while being healthier and happier than before. If you can be aware of the health risks involved with being overweight this alone should be enough motivation for you to get off your butt and get the results. If you have children this should be even more motivation for you.

Most people tend to look at a diet as a once off event and not a lifestyle choice, this way of thinking can be a big mistake and will most likely hurt you in the long run. If you think you only need to diet for a short time what will happen when that timeframe is done? Most likely things will go back to normal unless you're really committed to change.

There's a lot of conflicting information out there today and I think that has a lot to do with people getting confused as to what's best for them. Take this pill or do this diet without the need of exercise and be amazed with the results, this is just a load of hype and will get you sucked in.

The real proven way to lose weight is with a weight loss plan that includes a diet and daily tasks. Doing this will give you a focused game plan to get you to where you need to go. When it comes to weight loss I don't like to use words like want or like as this gives you an option. In reality you shouldn't have an option whether you want to lose weight or not.

A lot of people don't even know how many calories they consume each and every day and being confused with what to do or eat can make the whole journey hard especially if you're doing it on your own. If you're ready to stop making excuses and find the right motivation and drive to make things happen you're ready for the next step.

Obesity Can Leave People With Permanent And Life Altering Conditions

by Ran .S Drakein Health / Weight Loss    (submitted 2012-01-27)

There are many factors when it comes to choosing the right stairlift for your household. All of which need to be considered before any purchase is made as it could result in extra expense further down the line.

Does the user have a progressive condition? This is very important as it will effect whether or not a stairlift should even be purchased in the first place. For example, the user may be able to get onto a stairlift and ride to the top, but if they lose that ability and require a wheelchair, a through-floor lift will be necessary in order to appropriately accommodate the user's needs.

Can the user bend their knees easily? If the stairlift user cannot bend their knees comfortably then a standing stairlift is obviously the best option. This means that the user can go up and down their stairs in maximum comfort. But equally, if the user requires a wheelchair, do they have the ability to get on and off the stairlift into their wheelchairs with ease.

Who needs to operate the stairlift and are they able to do this? The controls of a stairlift should be fully explained to the user so that they have their independence in being able to go where they want. However, sometimes it's necessary for a carer to operate a stairlift for the user, in which case they need controls at both ends of the staircase. This can be assessed by surveyors that should come out before a stairlift is purchased. Companies such as Oakland Stairlifts give this service to every customer for free and then present every option available.

Who else has to use the staircase? This question doesn't pose as much of a problem as the others, but is still a deciding factor when learning how to choose a stairlift that will work around an entire household. Dogs, cats, children and adults will all be running up and down the stairs when the stairlift isn't in use. Because of this it is important to choose a stairlift that will fold away enough to allow everyone up and down the stairs safely. Most companies have a range of brands that can each individually accommodate different user requirements.

Choosing a stairlift is a turning point in life, and by considering all of the factors above hopefully finding the right one will be made a little bit easier.
